The Device Info Window

The Device Window shows information about an installed device and is where you can edit the device settings. To display the Device Info window, you select the device in the Installed Hardware window and press the edit button.

The window has two main parts, General and Model. Each section can be collapsed or opened to reveal more by clicking the disclosure triangle on the left.

The General section of the window shows the device name, address, notes, and a checkbox to turn off or on logging of device activity. The Model section shows model information such as the standard, manufacturer, and part number. It also provides a button leading to detailed information about the device in the Gadget Guide.

Device name

Your name for the device; for example, you may identify the device controlled by a lamp module as the “Lava Lamp”.

Address:
    X-10

The X-10 address is a House and Unit ID pair that matches the physical switch settings on the front of the device. House is a letter between A and P and Unit ID is a number between 1 and 16 in most cases. Some special cases are a thermostat, which uses an entire House code and has no Unit ID. Many motion sensor models have a second photo sensor that is signalled on the motion sensor’s House Code and Unit ID plus one.

Address:
    INSTEON

The INSTEON address is the number printed on the physical device. It is a unique ID of digits and letters in the format xx.xx.xx; for example, A6.15.1B. If you don’t know the number, and have linked the device to an INSTEON controller, you can use Thinking Home’s Setup Assistant to discover your already-linked addresses by asking the controller.

Notes

Enter optional information to remind you of details such as the date installed, or the location.

Log this device

By default, Thinking Home logs activity on this device. The checkbox allows you to turn off logging. You may want to turn off logging for devices such as motion sensors in high traffic areas that tend to clutter the log.

Model

The Model area contains information about the device model, such as the technology standard (INSTEON or X-10), manufacturer, and manufacturer’s part number.

Details

The Details button leads to the Gadget Guide window, where there are more details about the model including a shopping link to a web page where you may purchase the device.
